A futures prop firm evaluation is a paid test on a simulated account. You hit a profit target without breaking a loss limit, and the firm gives you a funded account that pays you a share of its profit. Every one of the 18 firms we track uses a simulated funded stage too, so live capital, if it comes, comes later.
The stages, from signup to payout
- Buy an evaluation. A monthly subscription or a one-time fee, by account size.
- Pass it. Reach the profit target while staying inside the max loss, any daily loss limit, the minimum days, and any consistency rule.
- Activate. Some firms charge a one-time activation fee to open the funded account.
- Trade the funded account. Almost always simulated, with its own rules, which can differ from the evaluation's.
- Request payouts. Real money, subject to buffers, qualifying days, caps, and a split.
- Move to live. Usually by the firm's review, after a set number of payouts or a profit milestone.
What an evaluation costs
Every firm we track sells a 50K account, so it's the fairest place to compare. The cheapest 50K evaluation on a subscription is Topstep's Trading Combine (Standard Path) at $49 a month. The cheapest one-time 50K is Top One Futures' Elite ACCESS at $39. The most expensive is Apex Trader Funding's EOD Trail Evaluation (No Activation Fee) at $1,190. These are list prices; most firms run discounts, so treat them as a ceiling. The program table shows every 50K option with its activation fee added in, and filters by billing type.
Monthly subscription or one-time fee
Billing splits three ways: 5 firms bill monthly only (Topstep, Take Profit Trader, TradeDay, Earn2Trade, and FTMO Futures), 6 charge a one-time fee only, and 7 sell both. A subscription rebills every 30 days until you pass or cancel, so a slow pass costs more. A one-time fee is paid once, but read the inactivity rules: one-time accounts at MyFundedFutures, Sim Funded included, fall under a 7-calendar-day inactivity rule.
Activation fees
At 9 firms there's no activation fee on any program: MyFundedFutures, Tradeify, Lucid Trading, Alpha Futures, TradeDay, FundedNext Futures, Funded Futures Network, Funded Futures Family, and FTMO Futures. Take Profit Trader and Earn2Trade charge one on every program (Earn2Trade deducts its fee from your first withdrawal instead of charging it upfront). The rest vary by program. At 50K, activation fees run from $5 (DayTraders.com) to $189 (Top One Futures).
Some firms let you choose. Topstep sells the same 50K Combine at $49 a month plus a $149 activation fee, or $95 a month with none. Which is cheaper depends on how long you take to pass:
| Months billed | $49/mo + $149 fee | $95/mo, no fee |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $198 | $95 |
| 2 | $247 | $190 |
| 3 | $296 | $285 |
| 4 | $345 | $380 |
Pass within 3 months and the no-fee path costs less. From month 4 on, the activation-fee path does.
Failing means paying again. Where a firm publishes a reset price, it's at or below the list price in our data. DayTraders.com offers no resets at all: you buy a new account.
The rules that decide pass or fail
Every evaluation program we track is a single step: pass once and you're funded. Five rules decide whether you do. You can line up any three firms' versions in the compare tool.
Profit target
At 50K, 47 of the 58 evaluation options ask for $3,000. The full range is $2,500 to $4,000. A higher target isn't automatically harder; what matters is the target next to the max loss.
Max loss (drawdown)
The max loss sets a floor under your balance. Hit it and the evaluation is over. At 50K, 40 of the 58 options set it at $2,000, and the range is $650 to $3,000. How the floor moves matters as much as the dollar amount:
Static EOD trailing, locks Intraday
Of the 50K evaluation options, 42 use an end-of-day trailing floor, 12 trail intraday (open profit included), and 4 use a static floor that never moves. Many trailing floors stop rising at the starting balance. The mechanics, trade by trade, are in trailing drawdown explained.
Daily loss limit
Earn2Trade, Elite Trader Funding, and FTMO Futures use a hard daily limit on at least one evaluation: hit it and the account fails. A soft limit, used by 10 firms on at least one program, ends your day without failing the account. Topstep, Take Profit Trader, TradeDay, Funded Futures Family, and Phidias Propfirm set no required daily limit on any evaluation. See daily loss limits: hard, soft, and none.
Minimum trading days
Minimums run from none to 8 days. At 11 firms, at least one evaluation can be passed in a single day or less, and Earn2Trade, Top One Futures, and Phidias Propfirm have a program with no minimum at all. A low minimum doesn't mean a fast pass if a consistency rule is also in play.
Consistency
Of the 18 firms, 15 apply a best-day rule to at least one evaluation: no single day can be more than a set share of your total profit. At some firms, breaking it doesn't fail you, it raises the target. Topstep's 50K Combine, for example, wants your best day under 55% of the profit target; go over and the target rises instead. The math is in consistency rules explained.
Worked example
| Day | P&L | Balance | Floor after close | Total profit | Best day share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start | $50,000 | $48,000 | $0 | ||
| 1 | +$1,800 | $51,800 | $49,800 | $1,800 | 100% |
| 2 | +$1,200 | $53,000 | $50,000 (locked) | $3,000 | 60% |
| 3 | +$600 | $53,600 | $50,000 (locked) | $3,600 | 50%, passed |
A hypothetical 50K with a $3,000 target, a $2,000 end-of-day trailing floor that locks at the starting balance, a 2-day minimum, and a rule that your best day must be 50% or less of total profit. Day 2 reaches $3,000, but the $1,800 first day is 60% of it, so the real target becomes $1,800 / 0.5 = $3,600. Day 3 gets there. Meanwhile the floor climbed from $48,000 to $50,000 and stopped there, so from day 2 on, the most you can give back is the profit you've made.
Straight-to-funded programs
Of the 18 firms, 9 sell a way to skip the evaluation and start in a funded account. You pay more upfront:
| Firm | Program | 50K, no evaluation | Cheapest 50K evaluation |
|---|---|---|---|
| FundedNext Futures | FNL:003 50K Instant (Labs limited release) | $149.99 | $133.99 |
| DayTraders.com | Straight to Funded (S2F, 'Instant') | $342 | $50 |
| Top One Futures | IGNITE Instant Funding | $398 | $39 |
| Funded Futures Family | Straight to Funded (S2F Standard) | $469 | $125/mo |
| Bulenox | Fast Track (Option 1: Trailing Drawdown) | $488 | $143 |
| Tradeify | Lightning Funded | $492 | $145 |
| Lucid Trading | LucidDirect | $515 | $136 |
| Alpha Futures | Direct | $519 | $129/mo |
| Elite Trader Funding | Direct to Funded | $747 | $207/mo |
The test doesn't disappear, it moves to payout time. At 7 of these 9 firms, the no-evaluation program applies a best-day limit of 20% on at least the first payout: no single day can be more than a fifth of the cycle's profit. Filter the program table to compare these with regular evaluations at the same size.
After you pass: the funded account
The funded account is where you get paid, and at almost every firm it's still simulated. Firms pay real money from simulated profit. The rules often change at this point: Funded Futures Network and MyFundedFutures, for example, allow news trading in evaluation but ban it around major releases on some funded accounts, and many firms add a buffer and a consistency check before each payout. Read the funded rules before you buy, not after you pass.
Payouts are their own subject: splits, buffers, qualifying days, and caps. See how prop firm payouts actually work and news trading rules for the two funded-stage rules that surprise traders most.
The move to live capital
Live money usually comes by review. Apex Trader Funding's live program is invitation only, and Alpha Futures reviews traders after 5 payouts on one account or a large lifetime total. Moving live often closes your remaining simulated accounts and can start the live account at a $0 balance. A few firms offer a more direct route:
- Earn2Trade offers a Live account straight after passing, if you pick it over the simulated LiveSim account.
- Phidias Propfirm converts an Express to Live (E2L) funded account to a real-money account once you hit its target.
- DayTraders.com sells Straight to Live (S2L), an evaluation that moves directly to a real-money account.
Before you buy an evaluation
- Price the whole path. Evaluation, months of subscription, activation fee, and a likely reset. The program table adds the activation fee in for you.
- Read the funded rules, not just the evaluation's. News, consistency, and buffers often start after you pass.
- Pick the drawdown you can live with. Intraday trailing punishes giving back open profit; static never moves.
- Check your platform. Not every firm supports NinjaTrader, Tradovate, or TradingView. See which platform to use.
- Compare three firms side by side in the compare tool before you pay for one.
Once you're trading, track your numbers the way the firm will judge them. The Prop Eval Tracker in CrossTrade's journal (from our publisher) checks a NinjaTrader 8 or Tradovate account against the profit target, max drawdown (trailing or static), daily loss, and consistency rule you enter. It checks the rules you give it, not the firm's live system, so enter your firm's exact numbers and treat the firm's dashboard as the final word. Check your firm's rules on third-party tools before you connect an account.
