Why it needs a bridge

A TradingView alert is a message, not an order. To trade from it, something has to receive the message and place the order at your broker. NinjaTrader 8 has no remote API for that, which is the gap the XT Add-On fills: it runs inside NinjaTrader and places orders there when CrossTrade tells it to. Tradovate does have an API, so for Tradovate accounts CrossTrade places the order from its cloud and nothing needs to run on your machine.

At a prop firm there's a second job. The strategy doesn't know the firm's rules, so the bridge has to stop an alert that arrives at the wrong time, on the wrong account, or when the account already holds too much.

How it works

  1. You get a personal webhook URL from CrossTrade and paste it into the TradingView alert.
  2. The alert message says what to do: buy or sell, how many, which instrument, and which account, for example account=PROP1234;. For a Tradovate account, add destination=tradovate;.
  3. CrossTrade checks the alert against your guardrails and blocks it if one fails.
  4. The order goes to the account: through the XT Add-On on NinjaTrader 8, or Tradovate's API on Tradovate.

You don't have to write the message by hand. The XT Alert Builder scripts turn an indicator's signals into ready-made alert messages with stops, targets, and trading hours, and the free version is public on TradingView. The webhook docs list every command.

Guardrails for prop accounts

Each of these is one line in the alert or one setting in CrossTrade, and each maps to a rule firms enforce.

  • Trading windows. Set a start and end time for an alert, or allow only exits after a set time, so nothing opens after your firm's cutoff.
  • Max positions. Block an opening signal if the account already holds the number of positions you set.
  • Kill switch. One switch, from any browser or by alert, blocks every incoming signal.
  • Strategy sync. Before entering, CrossTrade compares the position TradingView's strategy thinks it has with the real account, and waits, flattens, ignores, or corrects if they disagree. It stops a missed alert from leaving the account out of step with the strategy.
  • Rate limits. Cap how often similar alerts can execute, so a noisy indicator can't fire a burst of orders.
  • Brackets. Attach a take-profit and stop-loss to every entry, in ticks, points, percent, or dollars.
  • Continuous contracts. Write ES1! or MNQ1! and CrossTrade resolves the front month, so alerts don't need editing at rollover.

Guardrails check the alert, not the account's P&L. For a daily loss stop or a drawdown guard, add an Account Manager monitor, which can also block signals for the rest of the day once it stops the account.

What it won't do

  • Make TradingView instant. TradingView's alert delivery isn't guaranteed to be instant, and CrossTrade can't speed it up.
  • Trade NinjaTrader with the platform closed. NinjaTrader 8 must be running with the XT Add-On connected.
  • Guarantee a fill. An alert to several accounts places each order independently; one can fill while another doesn't.
  • Know your firm's stage rules. Some firms treat the evaluation and funded stages differently, and some change their automation rules without much notice. Check the firm page and the TradingView guide before you point an alert at a funded account.

Which firms' rules leave room for it

7 of the 18 firms we track publish rules that leave room for the TradingView automation. The rest either don't run on NinjaTrader 8 or Tradovate, or their fine print excludes it. This reads each firm's own policy; it isn't the firm's endorsement of CrossTrade, so open the firm page for the wording before you connect anything.

Questions traders ask

Do prop firms allow TradingView automation?
Some do. Of the 18 firms we track, 9 allow automated trading in some form and 7 ban it. Many that allow it add conditions: no high-frequency trading, no running the same bot at other firms, or different rules in the evaluation and funded stages. The automation guide has each firm's rule.
Does NinjaTrader need to be running?
For NinjaTrader 8 accounts, yes: the XT Add-On places the order inside NinjaTrader, so it has to be open and connected. For Tradovate accounts, no: CrossTrade places the order through Tradovate's API from its cloud.
Can one alert trade several prop accounts?
Yes. List several accounts in one alert and each gets the same order, placed independently. Every account gets the same size, so if your accounts need different sizes, use the Trade Copier instead, which sizes each follower on its own.
How fast is it?
CrossTrade's own processing averages around 30 milliseconds. That excludes the time TradingView takes to send the alert, which isn't guaranteed to be instant, and the broker's fill, so plan for the whole chain, not just CrossTrade's part.
Which CrossTrade plan includes it?
Webhook alerts come with every paid CrossTrade plan. Every new account starts with a 7-day free trial, no credit card required.
