To copy trades across prop accounts, you trade one leader account and a copier repeats each trade on follower accounts you own, sized to each follower. Of the 18 firms we track, 16 allow copying in some form and Earn2Trade and Funded Futures Family ban it. What costs accounts after setup is sizing, drift between accounts, and firm rules that a copier can break on your behalf.
Check the firm's copy rule first
Copying your own accounts is widely allowed, but some firms name the copiers you may use and some cap how many accounts can be linked. The full wording, with sources, is in which prop firms allow trade copiers.
| Firm | Copy trading | Max accounts |

Leader and follower accounts
The leader is the account you trade; followers receive the copies. Three choices matter more than the tool:
- Which account leads. Lead from one of your prop accounts, or from a sim account so every prop account is a follower with its own sizing. The copier built into TopstepX requires the lead to be the account with the lowest position size.
- How many followers. A firm's account cap and its copy cap aren't always the same number. Funded Futures Network lets you copy across at most 5 accounts at once, evaluations included. TradeDay lets you copy among evaluation and Funded Sim accounts, or among Funded Live accounts, but never between the two groups.
- One direction only. Copy from the leader to the followers and never back. If account A copies to B and B copies to A, every order loops.
Sizing: ratios versus fixed size
Copiers size a follower one of two ways. A ratio multiplies the leader's quantity: at 2x, a 3-contract leader order becomes 6 on the follower. A fixed size ignores the leader's quantity and sends the same number every time. Watch the rounding: 0.5x of 3 contracts is 1.5, and a copier that rounds down to 1 has cut the follower's risk by a third.
The account sizes you copy into decide the ratio, because firms don't scale drawdown in step with the balance. A 150K account is three times a 50K, but in 57 of the 59 programs we track that sell both, the 150K's drawdown is less than three times the 50K's. Compare the pair you hold on the programs table.
Worked example
| Account | Drawdown | Size | Loss at a 20-point stop | Share of drawdown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leader, 50K | $2,000 | 10 MNQ | 10 × 20 × $2 = $400 | 20% |
| 150K follower, fixed 10 | $4,500 | 10 MNQ | $400 | 8.9% |
| 150K follower, ratio 3x | $4,500 | 30 MNQ | 30 × 20 × $2 = $1,200 | 26.7% |
| 150K follower, ratio 2x | $4,500 | 20 MNQ | 20 × 20 × $2 = $800 | 17.8% |
Sizing by balance (3x) makes the 150K risk more of its drawdown per trade than the leader does. Its drawdown is 2.25 times the leader's ($4,500 / $2,000), so 2x is the nearest whole ratio that stays under the leader's 20%. Hypothetical round numbers; use your accounts' real figures.
Check each follower's contract limit as well. A ratio multiplies the leader's biggest trade, not just its typical one.
Instrument replacement: NQ on the leader, MNQ on the follower
Instrument replacement swaps the contract on a follower: the leader trades NQ, the follower gets MNQ, so a small account can follow a larger one. The catch: mapping changes the contract, not the quantity. Map ES to MES at 1x and one ES on the leader becomes one MES on the follower, a tenth of the exposure, because MES moves $5 a point to ES's $50. For the same dollar exposure you set the ratio to 10 yourself. NQ ($20 a point) and MNQ ($2 a point) work the same way.
Also limit each follower to the instruments it should trade, and confirm the mapping survives the quarterly contract roll.
Copy modes: mirror every order, or copy fills
Mirror every order
The copier repeats each placement, modification, and cancel, so followers carry the same working orders, stops, and targets as the leader. Each follower has its own resting stop, which protects it if the connection drops mid-trade. The weak spot is fills: a limit that fills on the leader can fill partly or not at all on a follower, leaving it with a different position or a stray working order.
Copy fills
The copier waits for the leader's order to fill, then sends a market order to each follower. A follower only gets in once the leader is in. The costs are slippage on the follower's market order and, in some setups, followers with no resting stop or target of their own: they exit only when the leader's exit is copied. If the copier is down at that moment, the follower is still in the trade.
Neither mode is safer in general. Pick by which failure hurts more, a missed entry or an unprotected follower, then test entry, stop move, target, cancel, partial fill, and flatten on sim before any funded account follows.
Keeping followers in sync after missed fills and disconnects
Drift is when a follower's position no longer matches the leader's. Partial fills, rejected orders, restarts, dropped connections, and hand-closed followers all cause it. Three rules keep it contained:
- Know what your sync does. A sync feature compares each follower with its target position and sends orders to close the gap. That fixes a missed fill, but after you deliberately close a follower, some sync engines put the position straight back. Decide which account is the source of truth.
- Treat reconnects with suspicion. A reconnecting platform can replay recent order events, and a copier that reads them as new trades duplicates positions. Know how yours handles it.
- Stop copying to a stopped account. When a follower hits its daily limit, the copier should skip it for the rest of the session. A copier that keeps sending orders re-enters the position that was just closed.
After each session, confirm every account is flat. For running a larger stack, see managing multiple prop firm accounts.
The opposite-position trap
The most expensive copier failure is a follower on the other side of the leader: it missed half of a reversal, you traded it by hand, or two copiers touched it. Firms treat that as hedging whether you meant it or not:
- Take Profit Trader counts copier-caused counter positions as a Rule 6 violation, which liquidates both accounts and forfeits profits.
- Lucid Trading bans opposite positions across your own accounts, including mini against micro and correlated products like long ES against short NQ.
- Topstep detects cross-account hedging, ES against MES included, in real time.
- Apex Trader Funding requires every copied account to trade the same direction.
Run one copier per account and one leader per group, and never set a follower to take the opposite side.
What happens around payouts
Payout requests and copiers interact:
- Topstep's built-in copier unlinks followers when you request a payout, and followers may disconnect when their Scaling Plan tiers differ.
- Funded Futures Network declines the payout if you trade between the request and the balance adjustment. TradeDay Fast Pass accounts must stop trading after a request until the funds arrive.
- Take Profit Trader requires the account to be flat with no working orders when you request.
- DayTraders.com goes the other way: place a trade after requesting so a report generates.
Take the account out of the copier group before you request and put it back once the payout lands. A payout lowers the balance, and the floor doesn't always come down with it, so recheck the follower's ratio before it copies again. The payouts guide covers buffers and cycles.
Platform copiers versus dedicated copiers
Most platforms have a copier of their own:
- Tradovate group trading. MyFundedFutures and Tradeify both name it for copying between your own accounts. Apex Trader Funding's help center notes it switches on automatically for users with several Tradovate accounts, blocks ATM brackets, and doesn't work inside TradingView.
- TopstepX copier. The only copier Topstep's rules describe. It works on Trading Combine and Express Funded accounts, not the Live Funded Account.
- Rithmic copier add-ons. Lucid Trading's store sells a Rithmic Trade Copier, and DayTraders.com supports Rithmic's rTrader Pro copier (a $10 a month add-on) and the Onyx Trade Copier.
At firms with approved lists (Take Profit Trader and Elite Trader Funding), the platform's built-in copier is on the list and anything not named is a violation. A dedicated copier adds per-follower sizing, instrument swaps, sync checks, and risk-aware stops. At Bulenox, though, tools must be user-built for personal use, and third-party API connections cost $100 a month. See platforms by firm.
Where your firm allows a third-party copier on NinjaTrader 8 or Tradovate, the CrossTrade Trade Copier (from our publisher) sets a ratio or fixed size per follower, swaps instruments per follower (NQ to MNQ, with the ratio still yours to set), and runs followers in copier groups that share one set of settings. Its Tandem Mode stops copying to a follower whose risk monitor has stopped it for the day, and on NinjaTrader 8 auto-sync corrects follower drift. They're two separate copiers: the NinjaTrader 8 one runs inside NinjaTrader, which has to be running, and the Tradovate one runs in CrossTrade's cloud. Neither copies between the two platforms, and the Tradovate copier's Order Mode is in beta, so verify it on demo first. It isn't on Take Profit Trader's or Elite Trader Funding's approved lists, so it's not an option there, and it can't reach accounts at Topstep, Alpha Futures, or DayTraders.com, which don't offer NinjaTrader or Tradovate. Check your firm's current rules before you connect it. Whatever copier you use, CrossTrade's pre-live checklist is a sound test plan.
